Why do we think?

If one has ever let go into non-thought one would realise that to not-think (and be aware of the state of consciousness) is quite a scary thing. Thought is constantly reinforcing the scaffolding that is our identity. Without thought we become dispersed in bodily sensations and sense impression of the outside world, we loose our centre, our selves. So, we think because we are afraid, afraid of loosing ourselves. We think because we are confused by the myriad sensations that assuage our body and mind; we think in an attempt to control them, but, we are confused. That is the truth. Thought is not necessary to live the good life. Yet, we feel wholly incapable without it. We are desperate, and so we think. Perhaps we should try to be desperate, and abide in that, feel that, experience it without trying to escape, for, for me, thought is an attempt to escape, and nothing more. Look at your thoughts and you will see. This thought is an escape from boredom, this, from moral reprehensibility, this thought an attempted escape from confusion, this thought, an escape from conflict.... and so on...

We think because our curiosity is insatiable.

I don't know about anyone else, but as soon as I find the answer to one of my questions, a dozen more spring up int its place.
