in Ireland protestants would have the nickname bill or billy
catholics would have the nickname Liam (liam neeson actor) both short for William.
also the surname Wilson is derived from William. "son of will" (William)

In other languages W is pronounced as V or B> My name is such and my nick is "willie" and have to change it in every country that I go to coz people laugh at the meaning of my name which is their slang for a male organ ("dick")("willie").LOL

Whenever I meet them at breakfast the girls tell me " Good Morning Willie-No not you! the little one over there LOL!!!
