Fantastic question and point! Untalented movie writers use sweeping, untrue generalizations to exploit this rare symptom for monetary gain. Sad, really. As education, diagnosis and treatment for TS becomes more common, the percentage of TS sufferers with coprolalia is getting smaller, Less than 15% now, according to the Tourette Syndrome Association, Inc. (see link below). Coprolalia is not a requirement for a diagnosis of TS.

As a Mom of a child with TS, OCD and ADHD, I deeply resent the jokes and rude stories about this disorder. It is AMAZING to me what people will tolerate in the name of political correctness, but a person who is just a little different is made fun of and ridiculed to the point of frustration.

My son is so much more than that. He is loving, sweet, artistically gifted, plays chess, builds complex lego sets, makes stop-motion animation movies with his iMac, has friends and does homework and chores just like everyone else. He s treated with the same love and respect, just like everyone else. He is allowed to tic at home without comment for others. He is loved deeply.

No, I didn't know. This is a very unfortunate illness that has
people that don't understand the disease, afraid of these people.
People need to know more about it, so they can understand it.
