I bought 2 male Siberian hamsters from the same litter and was told that they can live together. The info sheet I received states that they are social and can be housed together. I have only had them for two days but they keep fighting, not bad but just screeching at each other and sometimes they paw at each other. Never longer than a few seconds.

I am worried that it might get worse. Could it be because they are in a new enviroment? One is more aggressive than the other. Sometimes they are cuddled together sleeping and others they sleep in different parts on the cage.

I have never heard of a "Siberian" hamster. I think you mean Syrian hamster or Russian Dwarf Hamster. If they are Syrian hamsters, they absolutely should NOT live together. Only dwarf Russian hamsters can live together. Syrian hamsters are lone animals. These are young hamsters, but once they reach sexual maturity they will become fiercely aggressive with one another. If you wish to have 2 Syrian hamsters, please get them separate cages or they will fight until one of is killed. I'm serious...it's gory.

On the other hand, if these are Russian Dwarf Hamsters, they absolutely can live together in peace. Just be certain they are both the same gender or they WILL MULTIPLY if you know what I mean. And a female hamster might kill a male hamster to protect her brood. Merry Xmas.

yes, most dwarf hamsters live very nicely in same-sex pairs, and actually get lonely if they are separated. Make sure that you get them from the same cage at the pet store, because they do best living with their litter mates (usually put in the same cages) It is syrian hamsters who are the not-social kind and will fight with other hamsters if given the chance. To avoid fights, get a cage with lots of space, and two separate hiding spots (cardboard boxes that are just big enough to fit a hamster inside work well if laid sideways) also feed the hamsters separately, as they might fight over food.

From experiance, it will get worse. Few hamsters can be kept together without fighting. I would separate them immediately. They dont sound like they are out to kill each other...which most male hamster do, but they seem to want their own space.

Hamster fighting can be serious. Its actually is sick sport. Some male hamsters will fight till death.

for the safety of your hamsters...id separate them just to be safe.

good luck!

I don't think it's a cut & dried answer...if they get along, it should be ok. But if they are fighting, put one in a different cage.

The longer you let them fight, the worse things could get. I ended up "adopting" a maile hamster with 1/2 an ear because it got picked on by it's male sibling.

I have never had any success keeping two together. We have always ended up getting a second cage.
