First of all, labour is different for everyone...might be easier for you, don't worry too much. I would say the hard part is after the baby comes, that's what you should be worried about, but you will be fine as long as you have help around you.
As for labour...i ended up having a c-section. At the beginning labour felt like menstrual cramps and progressed to bad contractions. It was painful....good thing it is not continuous pain! Just prepare yourself for the worst pain ever and don't forget you have the option for epidural. You are not gonna be less of a woman if you go for it. Good luck.

First off, I highly suggest birthing classes offered through the hospital where you plan to deliver. This will ease your mind and get any and all questions you can come up with.

Labor is not something you can anticipate because it's different from woman to woman, and it is also unlike any pain you will ever encounter in your life. I labored to 5 cm on my own, alone at home. It was uncomfortable, and yes painful when it came on, but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. I ended up with a c section for several reasons, but it wasn't bad. The epidural doesn't hurt bad at all. If you've ever gotten any blood work done, the pain is pretty much the same - short. I too am uncomfortable with needles and the epidural was a breeze.

Even the recovery from the c-section wasn't that bad - and that was the first surgery I've ever had!

Relax!! Your body will help your through the pain and once your baby is out, you would forget about the labor part. The 9 months of pregnancy brings on longer, lasting, aches and pains, that is in many ways more annoying, than the labor itself.

Good luck!

Well...to be honest, it has been ten years since I have done this last, but I am now 38 weeks along with what will be my last pregnancy...and here is my advice to you:
If labor didn't hurt...they wouldn't call it labor! The birthing process is different for every woman and for every pregnancy. My first one was 14 hours. 12 of that was hard labor with contractions being 2 minutes or less apart. It was definately the most difficult one of them all.
The contractions do hurt and they get worse and worse as time goes on. The actual birth of the baby feels like a lot of pressure and a bit of a burning sensation...especially when the shoulders pass through. If you haven't considered an epidutral...you should. I had an epidural with my first after 8 hours of natural labor and WOW what a difference it made!! I was actually able to relax and get a bit of much needed sleep before it was time to start pushing. With my second, I got the epidural as soon as I could and my labor lasted about 8 hours and was much more enjoyable.
With the epidural, you get to skip past all the really painful and hard contractions, but you still feel the urge to push and you still feel the pressure when the baby comes out... but it doesn't burn as bad at all.
When it comes down to it...the truth of the matter is...once you hear that baby cry...all of the pain and hard work just disappears! In the end, I would have to say that the birthing process is painful...but if it were that bad...those of us who have endured it multiple times would have stopped at one!!
Squeezing anything bigger than a walnut through an opening the size of a garden hose is gonna hurt....but the reward at the end is well worth it! I would do it over again hundreds of times if I could....but I think that 5 is just good enough!
Oh...and about the pain of an epidural and the fear of needles....a little poke in the back is NOTHING compared to natural childbirth! You'll see!
Relax, be strong, take care of yourself, and good luck!

Contractions by far are the worse part! It feels like the most extreme period cramps a woman can have. The baby being born is an actual relief to the pain. The head presents a little pressure but once out ,everything else is a breeze. You will be surprised at what you are able to bear and handle(in fact you will feel damn proud lol!!!) Try to focus on your breathing and pushing, making sure each one is effective,do not let the discomfort consume you.The better you do this the faster the baby can be born.I have had three epidurals and I will say the needle is uncomfortable going in,but boy oh boy is it ever worth it. It takes a couple of minutes to take effect, but afterwards you will feel ALOT BETTER. I know labor is a scary experience, but it isnt at all as painfull and dreadfull as some women make it out to be. You will be fine and do GREAT! Congrats on your little bundle, they are truly a joy!!!!!

Don't be scared. Its not that bad if you have an epidural. With my first baby, I got an epidural and slept through everything until I started pushing. (no pain until after of course)
With my second baby, I was induced and went through labor fast. They stopped my epidural drip so I did feel some pain. I felt more pressure from the baby when I was pushing and I felt them stitch me up down there afterwards (yes, ouch).
Labor is exhausting but doesn't hurt AT ALL when you get an epidural. You don't see the shot so its not so bad. If you do decide to get an epidural make sure the anesthesiologist puts it in and not the doctor. Doctors that do it seem to make more mistakes, hence, you feel half your body and not the other half. (or something like that)
No worries. You'll be fine.

My first labor was a breeze because I had the epidural, even though I was in labor for 24 hours I felt no pain. My second labor was very painful because I had a natural birth. When I felt extreme pain from the contractions I just took tried to relax and deep breaths which help ALOT. I think the contractions are worse than delivery because they come back to back and can last for hours. When the baby is being born it hurts and burns but when your pushing the baby out you forget about the painful contractions and theres a relief once the baby was out.

For me the worst part was the contractions....pushing burned a bit but was not as bad as I had expected.
I had an epidural with my son and it wasnt painful, it felt like a pinch in my back. I also had an epidural with my daughter but I got it about 10 min before I pushed her out so it did me no good. Getting it that close to all that pushing made my back miserably sore for about 2 weeks afterwards.

I think, the contractions are less painful if you are in a hot tub. It should be a big one, so that you can move.
Once transition starts, this will be very painful, especially if the water bag isn't broken.
Pushing hurts a lot, baby will move downwards inside the birth canal. If you stand upright and use the gravity it is maybe faster. When the baby comes down, the pain will increasing very much!

The contractions were the worst part, after the water breaks. The rest of it is simply pressure. It was definitely worse than I expected, but that's because I'm a big baby when it comes to pain. But all-in-all it wasn't that bad. I plan on doing it again someday.

it depends on if you go natural or get an epidural. I've done it both ways and natural is tough, I won't lie to you. I think for me it was the contractions right before delivery that hurt the worst. Just take a childbirth class to learn how to breathe and what you can expect. Good luck!
