1 is D. the Missouri Compromise did three things: added Maine as a free state, added Missouri as a slave state (thus keeping the balance of free and slave states in the Senate even) and establish the 36'30' line as the northernmost boundary for slave states in the existing US. Thus it did not give either side control of the Senate (thus not B or C) and certainly did not solve the situation (so not A either). It did show that the issue of slavery was becoming problematic though.

2 is A. The Monroe Doctrine, written by Sec of State John Quincy Adams, told Europe that the US would remain out of their affairs and that Europe should not attempt to recolonize Latin America. C is tempting, except that the US stated it would remain out of their affairs. B and D are just irrelevant/wrong. The US basically stated that it was the prime power in the New World.

1.D: The only way to admit Maine as a free state was to admit Missouri, west of the Mississippi River, (oh my!) as a slave state.
The North/South struggle ended only in the Civil War. The alternate admission of free states-slave states preserved the balance in the Senate for the time being.

For your term paper, you are required to write 40 pages discussing the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the "unrest" that this caused.

2. A: James Monroe warned European powers against asserting their powers in the North America and South America.

For your many sins, you are assigned to write a term 40-page paper about whether it was right for the French to install the Habsburg prince Maximilian as Emperor of Mexico in 1860, whether it was wise of the U.S. not to recognize him, and whether it was just of the Mexicans to shoot him in 1865.
