One road - the right one

Law considers a person to be a man at 18 - they can be judged in a mans court with a mans sentence - they can be drafted to the army - they are old enough to go into some bars & in some places purchase alcohol

However, being a father of five sons with each at different ages and stages of development. One of my sons is 22yo and a teacher who privides well for his family consisting of a wife and 3 kids. I also have a son who's 21 this february whom dropped out of school at 16, never had a real job for longer than 2 months, has no income at all or the sense to create any, never left home, no girlfriend. He would be quite content living off his parents for another 21 years.

Based on my lifes experience at creating men, "Personally I consider a person a man", when he is "independant". Anything short of this then the person is "dependant" like any other child.

The initial question answers itself by stating "the man was already a man" BEFORE he walked down the road. I believe this to be correct as pointed out in the simple case of my son turning 21 .

Honestly, there is no mathematical correct answer to this question, as all people have different personalities, and all roads are different.

The only thing I can say is that the more difficult roads a person walks upon, usually the faster you will see maturity.

However, if the person is weak, you could actually see the person not necessarily maturing, but "falling." By falling, I am talking about the person possibly having a nervous breakdown, succumbing to alcohol or drugs, or rebelling against society.

Having discussed this question with the great sage Roberticus Dylonius, his response was a sketchy and off key, "The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind".

Unfortunately he did not give the locality, wind speed or direction so that is the only detail that was available. But I am sure if we all search far enough and wide enough it may reveal its secret message to us all.

His early great disciples, Petrus, Paulus et Miriam extolled exactly the same message in beautiful harmony (demonstrating the great thoughts about harmonies of that famous but highly secretive Greek Pythagoras of Samos) In fact somehow I suspect that they may have been members of the secret society he set up known as "The Pythagoreans". Maybe singing this way was their way of identifying each other in public places.

However, noone yet has added any more to the solution than that (except maybe Leo Kernighanus who did advise Billy about not walking down down the "Three Chain Road tonight" which he stupidly ignored and this resulted in his committing two counts of murder followed by his own suicidal demise.) And pre Robertus, the great prophet Antoinius Domino, colloquially known as The "Fat" one, did exalt that he was "Walking to New Orleans", so maybe the answer can be found there.

Nancia Sinatra also found boots to take a journey on as after all she did tell the world that these "Boots are made for walkin'" However I am unsure if they are what are needed by anyone as she also did say that "one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you" and we can really ask if that is the type of man we really want to see in this world, namely one who walks over others unless they are selective and walk over the undesireables of this world. But that creates problems too as who is classed as desireable and undesireable is open to conjecture as well.

So as you can see philosophically this question you ask is very deep (may even be deeper than the Marianas Trench), it is higher than any mountain one could climb, it is wider than any river ... and the solution may be the impossible dream!!!

Hope you had a great Christmas and have a superb 2007!!

Take care.

the answer my friend is blowing in the wind - the answer is blowing in the wind. Bob Dylan has walked many roads and I believe they call him a man.

SO ---- if you take the number of woman in the world and multiply that by 32 to the 10th power - you will have your answer.

As to the life event that makes a man a man - I think it is the age at which that man first cries and decides that it has not, in any way, made him less of a man - then he is truly a man.

"how many roads must a *man* walk down, ..."

If he's not a man it doesn't count, so he has to be a man *before* he walks down the road.

That does not imply it has to be his first walk down. He could have walked any number of times before being a man.

So the answer is: ANY NUMBER

Neither does it imply any stochastic dependence between manhood and walking down.

P(M|W) = P(M)

(The probability of M (manhood) conditioned to W (walking) is equal to the unconditioned probability.)

As that Zimmerman guy knows, manhood is correlated with beer, belching and wearing hats (see toilet icons if not convinced).

mathematically, a man does not need to walk down any roads before you call him a man,,,, some people are born not able to walk at all, and still become men,, or they lose their ability to walk before becoming a man, and still become men,,,

as to age,,,,,,, age is relative,,,, and growth points vary among ages,, so its not a factor in manhood,,,,
significant life occurrence,,,,,,,when you are able to realize your independence, both mental and financial, from others,,,,,,, and at the same time, accept your dependence in other areas on others, (you are not an island on this planet)

As other posters write... the answer my friend is blowing in the wind. However, consider this: if everyone who is walking in the world suddenly started walking in the opposite direction, would this change the speed of rotation of the earth (length of day). If so, by how much.

Zero!

If walking down a road is required to become a man, what about guys who are handicapped and are unable to walk? They'll never become men if one must walk down a road to become a man.

The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind. Mathematically speaking of course.
