They really don't.
It used to be thought that men had an extra rib because in the Bible it says God made Eve from one of Adam's ribs. However ask any doctor or look in a medical textbook and you'll see that men and women both have the same number of ribs.

Men do not have an extra rib than women; that is entirely untrue. The human body is equipped with 12 ribs: 7 "True Ribs" and 5 "False Ribs."

Men and women all have the same number of rilbs but women have a 'floating rib' that expands out when pregnancy occurs. It also clicks when I laugh really hard which is quite uncomfortable.

We all have 12 pairs of ribs.. Both females and males.. Unless someone was born with extra cervical or lumbar ribs but that is considered abnormality.
We have 12 pairs of ribs because we have 12 thoracic vertebrae

This is not a correct answer but it says in the bible that god made eve from Adams rib this is obviously a religious view on the question but it was the answer that jumped to my mind as i saw your question
