You do not need to remove the bed to get to the fuel tank. Rather you drop the tank and the reader is on top. More times than not this is the problem, however I have seen dash units go bad as well. The lesser of the 2 to replace is the gauge unit, they can be readily had at any pick a part for $20 or less. It takes about 15 minutes to remove and install. if the new cluster doesnt correct the problem, you will be looking at the sending unit inside the tank. Good luck!

Unless of course your Dakota dash is digital, in which case go to the tank sending unit. I have heard of the digital dash, never seen one :)

Many years ago, my children had the gas cap off and dropped a golf ball into the filler tube. At first I was annoyed by this, but...

When I got low on gas, the ball would hit the bottom of the tank occasionally, Bong, bong....I'd know I was getting low.

When it got to about a quarter tank, it would then roll. Rumble rumble as I stopped and started. Time to get gas...

Don't know if a golf ball would fit now, with the smaller filler tube, this was the days of regular fuel.

For carburated engines, try starting the car. If it turns over but doesn't catch, take off the air cleaner and sniff the carburator to see if you can smell gasoline. If you do then the engine is getting fuel, so the problem is elsewhere. If you don't smell fuel then the tank is probably empty.

you will never know for sure how much fuel you have. guages are not that expensive, but the labor to drop the tank is. this is an old sending unit so connecting points will be a *****. please make sure that you keep at least 1/4 tank to cool the fuel pump. this problem should be fixed or drive it until it's dead. and keep 2 gallons in reserve

I would not take the beb? off. If you drive around until it stops, you will know for sure that you have no gas in the tank.

Just fill it up, record your milage, and fill up again when you have less that half a tank, but more that a quarter. You know what your miles per gallon is, so it's easy. A lot easier that removing the beb(bed).

Recoured how many miles your car goes on a full tank then make a resonable guess when you need to refill the car.

keep refiling the tank every 200 miles and right down the mileage to keep track also keep a spare gas can with you just to be safe.
