Im about to get an electric guitar and i wanted to know if getting a teacher would be a better way to learn or just getting a book and teaching myself or if both would be better? I was also wondering how long it takes to fully understand how to play an electric guitar?

I like having a teacher. It gives you a better idea of how the music you are playing should sound and it's from someone who has been there and had to go through learning the guitar. With a book, although they show you what to do, they're not always as clear as actually hearing something. Besides, a teacher will tell you how to improve and where you are going wrong.
If you don't get a teacher, I'd recommend a tuition DVD as they're not as expensive as a teacher, you can hear the music and see what you should be doing and you can watch the bits you can't quite do over and over again.
I think you should get a DVD and a teacher, it's probably the quickest way to learn.
I asked my teacher how long it took until he could play and he said it took him about 2 years with regular practising.
It is a great instrument to learn though and it feels really good when you plug it in and play your favourite songs (and people recognise them!)
Good luck in learning!

I am a guitar player. Get a teacher!!! It will save you time and keep you from developing bad habits. You should try to find someone who is capable of teaching you the classical method, even if you are using an electric guitar.
As to how long it takes depends on how skilled you want to be. I could teach you three chords in an hour, but to play as well as Eddie Van Halen you will need to play and learn a lot more than just one hour. Above all else, get a teacher and ask every guitar player you know what they can teach you, and never stop learning - the more you know the better you can play!

we have a teacher. We like him alot - the feed back is good and we learn by playing songs we like.

I noticed that the cable TV ON Demand has a show that will teach you to play electric guitar.

Why don't you trying winging it, then if that's not working for you, find a teacher.
