The era of the Middle East strongman, propped up by and enforcing Western policy, appears well and truly over. His power is being replaced with rule by civil war, apparently now the American Administration’s favoured model across the region.

Fratricidal fighting is threatening to engulf, or already engulfing, the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Iraq. Both Syria and Iran could soon be next, torn apart by attacks Israel is reportedly planning on behalf of the US. The reverberations would likely consume the region.

Western politicians like to portray civil war as a consequence of the West’s failure to intervene more effectively in the Middle East. Were we more engaged in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or more aggressive in opposing Syrian manipulations in Lebanon, or more hands-on in Iraq, the sectarian fighting could be prevented. The implication being, of course, that, without the West’s benevolent guidance, Arab societies are incapable of dragging themselves out of their primal state of barbarity.

But in fact, each of these breakdowns of social order appears to have been engineered either by the United States or by Israel. In Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq, sectarian difference is less important than a clash of political ideologies and interests as rival factions disagree about whether to submit to, or resist, American and Israeli interference. Where the factions derive their funding and legitimacy from -- increasingly a choice between the US or Iran -- seems to determine where they stand in this confrontation.

Once again Zanzi treats us to a cut and paste, this time from http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article6272.shtml .

He does not even give credit, but his plagiarism is obvious because of the good writing, technically speaking, that is, no misspellings and not many grammatical errors.

On the other hand, the copied text is full of factual errors and unproved slurs on the United States Government.

Are your related to Oliver Stone? Everything seems to be conspiracy to you. The last thing the United States would ever want is a civil war in the Middle East. The most integral part of US foreign policy in the Middle East is to maintain stability, to ensure there in no disruption to the flow of oil because if that happens, energy prices skyrockets. United States supports Israel for one main reason, they are the only Western Democratic Capitalist economy in the Middle East, US merely supporting the spread of Democratic ideology as it did during the Cold War.

Why would Israel want a civil war on its door step, civil wars tends to spread beyond borders.

The destabilization in the Middle East is there own fault. If Lebanese government disarmed the Hezbollah as they were supposed to. Hezbollah would NOT have attacked Israeli soldiers and Israel would not have bombed Lebanon into the stone age in retaliation.

About these reported plots between Israel and United States to attack Iran or Syria, I am curious who is source? Bugs Bunny! Its Iran who is making threats. I doubt the US wants to engage in other war, its already fighting on two fronts Afghanistan and Iraq. If the United States need a puppet country to wage war in the Middle East on its behalf, it would chose a much less obvious country then Israel. Turkey would have been the better choice.

I will answer similarly to the way I responded to "Candycane" (who has clearly become somewhat agitated by your posting).

The author wrote "... each of these breakdowns of social order appears to have been engineered either by the United States or by Israel..." The keyword is "engineered", which has a WHOLELOTTA IMPLICATIONS and probably couldn't be proven even 100 years from now when the pertinent documents will be de-classified. Some documents probably will never be de-classified for historians to evaluate and ponder. My point is that the author did not support his thesis with evidence - but then you couldn't anyway on this forum - even if he had it (and he obviously doesn't). This is not a PhD dissertation (and nor could it credibly be in the absence of solid and pretty much irrefutable evidence)...it's just someone speculating aloud on Yahoo and like it or not America is pretty staunchly into that whole "Free Speech" and "Freedom of the Press" thing...

The history of the Arabic Middle Eastern peoples has been one of ETERNAL violence and bloody conflict, looooong since before the time of Mohammed, even. Now, the current trendy answer is to say, "Well, the history of Europe has been just as bad!"

No, it hasn't. There has been much war in Europe over the centuries, but there have been periods of peace in various regions throughout all of European history--it's never been a case of 'all war, all the time, in all of Europe', while the Arab world has always been engulfed by large scale war or smaller regional fighting---continuously, non-stop.

So, it doesn't matter what the US or Israel due-- it is an INHERENTLY violent region. They are hell-bent on killing each other for no ******* reason.

We should talk of understanding and peace among nations in the Middle East. Arrogant attitude only spark hate. We should concentrate on ground realities and pray for success of peace efforts being made. Iraqi people are paying heavy price for confrontation. A policy of reconciliation instead of confrontation is needed. Every one has realized this fact. There is no point in blaming others for our problems.

You have provided an argument. I do not dispute it, I agree with most of what you are saying. I could develop your argument further but then it would be much more blunt and much more divisive. However, this is Yahoo! Answers. You have not asked a question. You have made an argument.

The policy that Israel (and Israeli lobby in the US) is taking is a shrewd and far-sighted one. I respect, but disapprove it. If I was an Israeli, I would appreciate it, no matter how unethical or inconsiderate to Arabs Israeli policies are.

Your argument is valid and quite on point.

And for some to suggest that ..."western civilization is not forcing our policies on anyone" ... is immature and uneducated. Why anyone would publicly pronounce such a declaration is laughable, and shows great ignorance.
