There is not any film made till yet which show you India's great history. But, you can see Lage Raho Munna Bhai & Gandhi, if you want to know teaching of two great indians of all time i.e MAhatma Gandhi and Lord Buddha.
You can also see the films like Rang De Basanti or Lagaan to check out Evergreen power and manhood of Indians.
For pure entertainment you can see Shollay or Hum aapke Hai Kaun.

I would suggest Rang De Basanti..it shows patrioism of india back in the day and even today...The acting is great and its has its share of english. Lage Raho Munnabhai is a good movie to teach about mahatma ghandi...these r more of the patriotic side of india...if u want to luk at another view water is certainly interesting...but it is for mature audiences...it is about widows and how they were treated in the olden days... i guess its all about what aspect of india you want to show your class...hope it goes well :)

Rang de Basanti! it has a bit of a twist at the end so you might want to watch it first before deciding whether you should show it to the class.
Swades was good too.

but I bet if you contacted the Indian Embassy they would be delighted to recommend something, maybe even provide it for you.

mother india,
crap i cant rem the name but it had shah rukh khan, gayatri and it ws rlly sad abt india...worked for nasa...stayed in india to help the poor.....
