It may sound amazing, but most people can control their nightmares – at least to some extent – by using their own waking imagination! Here’s how it works:

Every time you have a nightmare, take some time the next day to think about it. Close your eyes and imagine it in detail, just as though you were re-living it … unless it is just too upsetting to do so. (If so, you may want to get the help of a doctor or counselor to help you work through your nightmares.)

Here’s the trick: In your waking mind, instead of letting the nightmare end badly, imagine a new, happier ending. In the new ending, imagine yourself to be very brave, strong, and triumphant! Make yourself the hero of the dream, instead of the victim.

also dreams and nightmares are self therapy and you should let them occur as they come, they'll stop when "the patient is cured"

What exactly is the nightmare about?

If it is a renactment of horrible personal events from the past (or forgotten past), like child sexual abuse, or accident, I strongly suggest your friend to seek professional help.

Nightmares can only go away if one confront face to face with their memory and understand and accept one self. That involves incredible courage and strength. It's best to bring up the issue and talk to a professional.

Because these events are not just psychological, it's also physical. When one experiences tramatic events, s/he releases tons of chemicals in the brain that help strengthen that partiuclar event. The memory can be so strong, that's why some people can literally re-live their past.

For some people, the memory is stored strongly, and only resurface due to some factors after some times.
See professional help.

This is something that she needs to be dealt with personally first.

She still needs to find help. She doesn't need to talk about that event if she doesn't want to. But it's still good to find those helps because they can monitor her condition. She can also find more emotional support and safety from professional help.

Scientists are trying to make pill for people to take after tramatic event so that they don't have post tramatic stress disorder (STSD), but erasing memory is a controversial issue.

Good luck

If the dreams are interfering with everyday life, then I would suggest seaking help, but if they aren't, then face your fears and just keep happy thoughts.
