Hot lemon is a good one as it is a natual antiseptic so will help kill of the bacteria in your throat.

Paracetamol can help with the immediate pain but isn't something to get rid of a sore throat.

Rest and fluids long term.. Avoid citrus, it irritates the throat. Warmth short term. Gargle with an Alcohol based mouthwash or Liquor. Use a wool scarf or something else warm around you neck. There are also medications over the counter that shorten the flu's duration. Warm tea with honey is excellent.

The warmth helps to keep the virus breeding rate down. The Alcohol eliminates bacteria and prevents a secondary infection. If you swallow the alcohol it acts as a sedative, and helps you rest.

Don't use Liquor with aspirin or other cold medications.

Gargling with warm salt water with help to sooth the tissues in your throat. If the sore throat is from an infection this will only be a quick fix and the throat pain will return. There are some over the counter cough dropps that contain local anesthetics that can longer lasting relief.

Gargle with peroxide. Look up my other answers for a longer explanation, but it kills germs (salt water doesn't) and it brings oxygen to the area which helps healing. Don't use long term, but at the first sign on a sore throat. I used to get them all the time and since I've started using it as soon as I feel the itchy/burn I haven't had a sore throat or tonsillitis since. I use it in my ears too and now no more earaches!
