Do it as young as possible. They will grow an attachment that will be hard to break. My kids both gave it up at 4 months. My mom said i never used one. But some parents just like to stick in their kids mouth to shut them up. Kids grow physiological dependencies. I had a friend who was 20 and she still used her security blanket. She even had a name for it!!!!!!!

I never did. It gave my daughter comfort. She only used it at bedtime and when she wasn't feeling well. When she was a little over two years old she decided she didn't need it any longer. Children will discard the pacifier themselves if ALLOWED to develop in their own speed. And FYI a pacifier has nothing to do with teeth coming in crooked. That is genetic, chances are that if you or your spouse or someone in your immediate families had braces your child will need them as well.

I have a 13th month old that still loves her pacifier. My plan is to get cut the nipple off at 18 months and pray that it is an easy transition. I do however make sure that she uses it only at night. I hide it during the day. If she sees it......... it's trouble.
Good luck. Every child is different.

Our kids didn't really suck it much, but if you don't want your child to get too attached to it, then you really should take the pacifier away by 18 months, after 18 months any habit is going to be really hard to break.

I took my daughter's away when she was 3. I took her to the dentist and he said he could tell by looking at her teeth that she was a paci user.
I took them away cold turkey...the first 2-3 nights were terrible going to sleep for her. But once she got through them, she was fine. I would recommend taking them away earlier than 3 yrs old....it can also wean them too early from the breast if they become dependent on them.

I got both my sons in one fell swoop. My older son was 2 1/2 and his little brother was just over a year. Took them both away at the same time. It was pretty bad for a while (esp. with my older son) but that was a while ago and nothing more than a distant memory for me now. :)

My son is eight months old, and I haven't yet. Some people say to take it away when they get teeth, but honestly your child will normally get over it on their own. If they haven't down it on their own my about a year old, though, you need to intervene and help them.

each kid is diffrent, i have a neice and we took hers away at 2. she really liked hers. It's not that hard to tell. if there starting to get teeth problems. take it away, or if they get a new toy they really like and forget, even 4 a short time, about it. take it away. always give them something else they can hug or chew on insted. teust me, if u don't it'll be hell.
