A true alpha male is a leader who will listen to those under him, then make the necessary decisions. He knows who he is. An executive type.
Here are some fictional alpha males you are undoubtably familiar with:
Jean-Luc Picard
William Rikar
Elrond (Lord of the Rings)
Theoden (Lord of the Rings)
Aragorn (Lord of the Rings)
Bill Pullman in Independence Day
And some real-life alpha males include:
Colin Powell
Peter Jackson (director, Lord of the Rings)
Viggo Mortensen
Bruce Boxleitner
Patrick Stewart
Pierce Brosnan
Sean Connery
George Lucas
You can not imagine ANY of these throwing their weight around, but there is no doubt they would win in the end. They are Alphas.

The stereotypical alpha male (rather than some ideal leader as others have answered)—what people tend to mean when they say alpha male in colloquial speech—is basically a guy with a high-testosterone personality and physical characteristics.
Physically, they would have broad shoulders, a muscular build, a square jaw, heavy brow, small eyes, small lips, and a deep voice.
Personality-wise, they would be aggressive, rash, cocky, obsessed with achieving and maintaining social dominance, .not typically very intelligent or well educated, crass, loud, demanding, and obnoxious. These personality traits tend to overlap quite a bit with the personality disorders of narcissism and psychopathy; the difference is really only one of degree.
It is unfortunate that many women (especially young women) see this stereotype as the definition of man and will rebuff the approaches of any men who don't fit this stereotype. These same women then come to think that all men are lying, cheating opportunists. They then become extremely skeptical of all men's intentions. This seems to apply to a sizable majority of women from my observation if MySpace is any indicator.

I found your question interesting and being a female felt it important to go to the source so I approached my husband with the question and found his answer to be more plausible than the ones I read.
He said WISDOM, why because any or all males in the pack can have physical strength, and loud voices, that would not make other males respect him enough to listen to him and an alpha male is a leader so in order to have TRUE followers he must have their respect, any male can use physical strength to over power a smaller male BUT will he truly have his respect?
It takes wisdom to lead my husband said and that in his opinion makes a TRUE Alpha male.

I would say there are no physcial characteristics- the role of alpha male is a taken role- not given because of looks.
I like to think that the philosophy of the alpha male is that he is the variable in the equation- he is the one that makes things go well or not go well. In that sense, you are the equation and he is thinking from your point of veiw (confident that you also see him as the variable you need). This makes that alpha male insightful, confident, secure, and expected to be the leader.

In theory he should be tall heavyset belligerent and insensitive. In truth there don't seem to be any physical characteristics, the smallest runtiest men put out aggression and push there luck. Alpha male in humans is a myth.

It's ALL in your attitude. Was Fonzie big? As for me, I end up being the Alpha quite often. Not by design, it just happens that way. I am a big fellow. Got a loud resonant voice and I talk a lot.
Ended up leader over bigger stronger guys. Some fellas are just like that. You is or you isn't.

I would say a natural born leader, well connected, intelligent, integrity, someone who takes action and does things for themselves (as opposed to someone who merely observes others).
Physical characteristics are not necessarily the best identifying characteristics, as looks can be deceiving and tall &/or strong don't necessarily correspond to the best traits due to the modern world we live in, due to technology being able to replicate or improve on physical areas & thus making these traits more or less reduntant.

The primate " alpha male " is a coalition builder. He leads by securing trusted allies. He is generally tall and symmetrical. Bullies are soon overthrown. Among our ape cousins, females have been know to overthrow bullies and bonobos have coalitions of females as " alphas ".
