You can play split screen Co-op. But if you want to play with someone on-line Co-op, then yes, you need Xbox live. It's only $50 a year. Pay up and enjoy the full potential of the 360!!

No, you do not need either of those. My friend and I played the game fine.

P.S.The vs. is lame.
