Blu-Ray is a new DVD format using a blue light laser rather than the red light used by current DVD players. This allows about six times as much data to be held on a disc and therefore the pictures can be higher definition in line with the new generation of HD TVs.

Blu-Ray is a new high-density storage medium for digital files like movies and music. It's much like a DVD and, in fact, is being marketed as a competitor to DVDs. Blu-Ray discs can store up to 50GB of data where DVDs can store around 17GB at best.
If you're curious, the name Blu-Ray comes from the fact that the laser that reads the disc is blue-violet in color.
