Sigh...we are not a democracy. The US is a representative republic. But yes, as corrupted as the waste from Satan's own chamberpot. The US was founded by a group that was fed up with the way England had been run by corrupt wealthy nobels. The system was established in the hope that officials would do their elected job, and step aside. The plan was that Joe the carpenter, or William the blacksmith would be able to run in fair elections, and represent their peers. However... some were intoxicated by their power and position, and began to sell their influence. With the extra money these shady whores of state could out campaign their opponents and get back into office to make more bribes possible. (Has anyone ever had their vote decided by those silly signs stuck in peoples yards?) Soon the only ones who could afford to run for office were the well off, the electible everyman was a thing of the past. Later the well off wer replaced by the wealthy, and them by the political legacy families, and corporate juggernauts. The circle is complete. The ruling class is a corrupt, rich, and elitist band of professionals who demand to be treated like... nobels. Isn't this why we gave King George the boot in the first place?

There are far more corrupt types: the pseudo democracies, Zimbabwe for example or the old Thaksin era in Thailand. The problem comes when a single party runs the whole show. Checks and balances are tossed away and the keys to the vault are in the hands of the ruling party.
Communism also was corrupt - look at the delightfully corrupt leaders of the People's Republic of China. Lately they have been prosecuting some of these neer do wells but I think it's just the tip of the iceberg.
Many democracies are very corruption free:
New Zealand, Denmark, Singapore, Iceland and Finland all rank high. The USA is 20th...
