That is a good question but a hard one to answer. I can only suggest that you check out,as well as you can,the recipient of your donation.

Depends on the charity. If the money goes directly to volunteers in the field who will use it to purchase food and medicine with little overhead costs, then that's a wise donation to make. On the other hand, if you are sending your money to some special interest group comprised of professional lobbyists, that cash is likely going to be used to pay the salaries of people at their cozy Washington DC headquarters. And if you send the money directly to an agency of the African country's government, it will likely go toward buying palaces and guns.

Your best bet is to do some research on the internet before sending any money to any organization.

It could, depending on the charity you use. But don't let that stop you from giving. Use the service mentioned above (charity navigator) or other info on NGOs (non-government organization) to figure out which charity gets more money to the people they work for.

Even if a portion of the money is lost in administration, something is better than nothing for someone who is dire straits.

A really good question. In some cases that will certainly happen.
Check out the charity of your choice. They are required to publish information on what percent of each dollar donated goes into actual use of the proposed cause. Additionally, they are required to disclose what percent is used for marketing and management.

I just saw on TV something about Africa..do you know the clothes that we donate to the poor here in America..Over 33% get sent to Africa..and the people in Africa have to buy them from street vendors..They get $6-7 a pair for jeans...those people are getting rich off our clothes we donate.. I know of a Christian org. that takes money for "starving kids" overseas..Those kids get less than half of that money..the rest goes to their staff, expenses, etc. So, now. I just donate all my money to a local org. like a church or human society..to where I KNOW where my money goes.

I saw on t.v. that all the money that goes to Africa really does go there, but unfortunately it goes to the government first (they're supposed to distribute it.) And since the government is greedy they don't really distribute the money. But hopefully the money you give actually gets to the people of Africa.

Thats about it !! NEVER give to a charity outside your own country. AND I suggest you give to a charity IN YOUR OWN city to help those close to you. You can check up on them any time and dig deeper to see just who is getting what and make sure it goes to where YOU want it to go.
