Why do most companies close their doors for christmas but nobody recognizes the holiday as christmas, they always say Happy Holidays when the 4th of july is a holiday but most places are open?

Nobody has addressed the question. The point I'm trying to make is that this holiday seems more important than any other, yet it is still not politically correct to say merry christmas.....saying happy holidays is 'supose' to cover all the december celebrations but stores are not closed for the 8 days of Hanukkah, or kwanzaa. Everyplace is shut down for Christmas but even on christmas day or christmas eve nobdy says merry christmas, because its not politically correct to mention it in public.

And for answer # 6, wal-mart is even closed on christmas

They close because the government recognizes it as a Stautory Holiday and they would have to pay their employees time and a half. Also because it is a religious holiday, an employee has the right to refuse to work on it. Also the majority of companies do recognize Christmas as a holiday and have changed alot of the process of saying Merry Christmas once again and not just the happy holidays.

There are many places that do not close for Christmas. For example: Walmart, local service stations, the hospitals, some video stores, ... But the reasons for the others closing at Christmas, I'm sure, is to give their employees time to be together with their family and friends, even if they don't look at this day as a Holy day.

How does saying "Happy Holidays" mean that they don't recognize Christmas? Sorry, but it doesn't.

BTW, there are other holidays that businesses traditionally close on.

Most places close on Christmas day because most people would take the day off anyway. There are some businesses, however, that do just give employees flex holidays that they can take off for whatever they consider their holiday.

As much as I hate to admit it, I believe it has to do with religion. Look at the religious holidays: Christmas, Easter, etc. Most places are closed, yet on the Fourth of the July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, etc., just about everyone is opened. Just my opinion.

Although majority of Americans do celebrate Christmas, we still shouldn’t forget that there is such a diversity of cultures in America, with so many different religions, and with people from all around the world, who don’t celebrate Christmas. So I think it all comes down to majority of population.

I have spent Christmas in Paris and in Germany. Germany was the best. Nuremberg has a big outdoor Festival and the people were so much fun. ( of course they were drinking warmed wine all night.) In Paris the lights on the Chancey DE Leon ( the main street that runs through the Arch DE Triumph) were just incredible.

Well, Christmas is a family time and it is also the time of celebrating Christ's birth. People have to spend time going to church and opening presents that others had bought for them. Everyone wants to spend time with the people they love.

Most places close for christmas to give their employees more time with their familys and to relax. Christmas is a time of reunion, happiness, and relaxation and many employers recognize that.
