The italian horror movies, must we need the gore and slaughter elements to produce a good horror?

We just remember the glory names like Mario Bava, Dario Argento or Lucio Fulci who have knocked down the market of Hammer Horror in the end of 70´s. Are the italian horrorfilms much more better & having more surrealistical gores than the Hammer british horror classic?
