Skype is the best, and among the cheapest. The quality is usually pretty good, with occassional glitches. We don't have a landline or cell phone either one, so we use Skype as our only telephone access, so use it a lot.
From the UK to Canada will cost you, but the amount is very reasonable.
You can only call other computers for free, on any of the services ... to call a telephone from your computer is a paid service on all.

Yes, it is possible; but that house must also have a computer.
1. You can use any instant messaging service; all you need is speakers and a microphone on both sides. The IM services should have some sort of voice communication system.
2. You can download Skype, an internet telephone program from http://www.skype.com. You need a microphone and speakers; there are absolutely no fees (downloading, calling, etc.) Via email you can tell your friend/relative to download Skype and buy a microphone if they don't have one. If your friend/relative doesn't have a computer, well, you can call their house using Skype, but it'll cost you.

It is possible but will most likely cost money, but it usually cheaper than calling using a landline. Skype is popular and free for computer to computer calling. There are fees however for calling to house numbers.
Also you can use www.jajah.com for free for the first few calls. (You get three USD worth of credit when you sign up).

Skype is the best way to do it currently, though the service will cost a monthly fee at the end of 2006. But for clarity and the least amount of hassle... go with Skype.
