I always hear people saying it! I am sick and tired of it. What do you think they mean when they say it? Also, what do you think their intentions of saying it are?

Psychologically, generally speaking, if you expect more in the beginning but the outcome is bad, you would crash harder and be more depressed afterwards.

But if you didn't expect much, even if it fails, you can make yourself feel better by thinking, "see, I KNEW that's gonna happen." The sense of getting it RIGHT would make people feel at least not as bad.

However, if you are a positive person then you don't need that premptive measure to protect yourself.

I think it best to not have unrealistic expectations. If you tie your satisfaction to a specific outcome, you're bound to be disappointed most of the time. Even if you do very well you could still end up unhappy. It's better to take the action and accept whatever happens. That's what I mean. Some people are just pessimistic and want to destroy others. It's easier for them to try to bring down others rather than improve themselves. These types are to be avoided. When I say it I mean "be realistic." Others may mean "you're going to fail." It depends on who you're talking to.

I thought it was "Dont give your hopes up"
and I think it means even if things seem just plain awful at the moment theres always the chance to improve somehow and someway in the future.

Also, if your hoping for something you may want it, or want something to come true so if you stop this then you'll feel down theres always some hope for everything just keep it up and hopes it comes true.

I personally would only say it if I knew that what a person was hoping for was a sure thing. And I would say it just to keep the conversation sane.
You can't have people making serious plans based on something that "Might" happen.
But again I would only say it if the good thing was a sure thing. People who stifle optimism are toxic.

I cannot believe anyone still says that in todays times. Those were usually things said by parents who didnt want their children to reach for the stars. They wanted them to live a mundane life and just follow in their footprints and patterns. Things like that are said by pesimists. Those who never went for anything themselves. Those who "settled".
If you are an optimistic person you should have been encouraged to go for it even if you would fail. Why not go for it so you wont have those "shoulda's". Those are the If i only would have, could have should have. Otherwise known as regrets.
When you die do you want shoulda's or do you want.. When I tried this and have those memories all the things you tried, regardless of failure... at least you tried.
My thought are of solid encouragement. Give it a try or how else would you know for sure? I would rather try and fail than to never try things at all. Speaking within reason. Not talking about jumping off bridges. Just general things in life.
Give it a try, go for it, and if you fail find something else to try in its place. I sit here shaking my head at all those parents who told that to their children, for now we are missing out on doctors, theorists, mathmeticians, etc., thanks to them being discouraged in life. There could have been that 1 person who was discouraged who could have solved many of earths problems, for which we are now without. That 1 person who could have solved cancer, or solved aids, or something society is crying for help with.
I say go for your dreams no matter. If people want to hold you down that is their issues not yours speaking.

I believe one should keep their hopes up high. This is a more optimistic view in life and reinforces a more positive outlook in one's future. People who keeps saying this to you do not in anyway help encourage you to look bright into the future. One saying that I believe in is "Always hope but never expect." When things go wrong, there is always hope for a better tomorrow but when you expect something then it does't go your way, you're very open to dissapointments.

It means not to get too excited or happy about something because it may not happen.
