As long as you are expressing purpose, you should be able to use either method.

We went to the beach to sunbathe.
We went to the beach in order to sunbathe. (for the purpose of sunbathing, with the intention of sunbathing).

However in a sentence like "I want to sunbathe now" , it is an expression of desire, not purpose. Therefore you couldn't use the "in order to" expression.
