my daughter just got a computer for christmas, it has windows98 installed and we currently use charter communications (cable) for our internet provider. I was trying to connect her computer to the internet and it wouldn't allow me. It just kept trying to dial a connection but we do not have dial up we have internet through the cable company. Can anyone please help me? I need specific directions if possible. thanks.

You really need a router which connects to the cable on one side and up to 4 PC's (usually) on the local side.

Go through the network setup wizard on her machine and tell it you have a Lan connection to the Ethernet. View all of the network setting (especially the IP address) that you have on the working machine and make sure that they match.

If that doesn't work, it could be that your ISP may be checking your MAC address (a number unique to any ethernet interface in the world).
to prevent using an unauthorized computer.

Get a router, and give the ISP the router's MAC address.

In the short term, call them and have them enter her MAC address instead. This could also be set in the cable modem too.

You could always use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) included with windows, but then you'd need another NIC (Network Interface Card).

To get on a High Speed Internet like cable will need a Cable Modem. The modem in the Windows 98 is low speed Dial up the fastest it can go is 56 Kilobytes Per second. Cable Internet is much higher, 100+. You can most likely get a cable modem at www.dell.com or at any computer retailer.

I hope this was helpful!!

you need to download the same software that is on the other computer and have it hooked up to the modem as well. if you want them both to access the Internet and share printers and the like, you will need to get a router. if this all sounds like french to you, you can call charter and they will set you up for a fee, or if you have a neighborhood guru he/she might assist you for a few Cheetos or some oreos (may personal favorite). good luck and Merry Christmas.
