very loud alarm system that auto dials help... bars and locks on every window and door..... a well armed citizen... 357( not automatic as most do not keep them maintained and they can jam) with 125gr hollow point light load so it dose not leave the building but stays in the bad guy... and a good 12 guage 19" with 5 shot light load also to keep it in the house but still stop the bad guy.... a cool head and a good aim... never shoot to wound someone coming at you or breaking into your house while you are there...they intend you harm and even a 357 "wound" will not stop them from harming you... shoot at center of body mass and then at head if they keep coming. and are close enough...practice so you can do this right. because, In most cases, you will have less than 2 seconds to stop the attacker... or you are dead.

DO NOT use any pistol under 38spcl... 9mm will not stop anything unless you are a dead eye shot and can fully function under that kind of pressure...unless you are very, very good in all areas of weapons stick to revolvers not autoloaders...

Do not pull a gun on any one unless you are going to pull the trigger.... Know what you are shooting at...not your kid coming in late... but when you do have to shoot pull it up and pull the trigger... do not give warning in your own house... he knows you are there and is going to hurt you..

You need levels of protection. A truly motivated person will get into your home if he wants to. If you have good locks and good lighting and a dog and such, he will most likely seek an easier target. Criminals are opportunists. Make it harder for them and you're less likely to be a victim.
