Children will only act like teenagers when they are only 5 if permitted to do so by their parents. Some parents think this behavior is an indication of how smart or mature their children are. But, there is truly only so much a five year old can do. So, if you treat them like they are 16 when they are five, and can't give them the same responsibilities you would give a teen, you end up with a brat that thinks he/she can tell you what to do by the time they really are teens.

Also, it is so easy for them to be exposed to worldly issues. Pop music has little of the sense of romance and innocence it once had. TV, no need to go there, that is obvious. As a parent, you have to work at keeping them young and protecting their innocence as much as you can. Still, as soon as you send them to school where they are exposed to kids whose parents don't do the same for their kids, they get a good dose of it. This is why so many parents home school their children. I was a single mom, otherwise, I would have taken this route.

I'm with you! I have an 8 year old who asked for an Ipod and a laptop...I about died. Instead I gave him gifts that I got when I was 8 like board games and legos. I am unsure what it is. All these toys get so hi-tech and then its all over TV too so they see it everywhere. Also, kids in school talk about it so of course he hears and sees that there...not to mention kids who come from non-discipling families. I try to be a good parent but its a BIG job!

Because the world is becoming a VERY dangerous.. Materialistic place..... Parents arent pARENTS anymore... they are the children that they were in 1992... The problem isnt the kids now.. it was the kids in the last generation.... They never actually grew up... and now that they are having kids..... It's just like raising a friend...?... very hard to explain..

Because we treat them that way. My son just turned 9. He got a cell phone (a parental one with only 5 numbers in it) for his birthday last month.

Someone gave him a credit card for xmas with $150 on it.

Unfortunately, the world is a much different place than it was 30 years ago. Back when I could walk to the corner store with 50 cents...buy a soda and a candybar and walk there without fear of harrasment or kidnapping or whatever....

Now, it's all about the cash flow and who has what....

Can't wait to drive me new xmas porsche today!

Parents, media, fashion industry (I'm sometimes surprised by what I see them selling in the children's clothing section), etc.

I'm a mother of 2 children (ages 9 & 6). Thankfully they still act like children. They're not asking for things that are age inappropriate or acting older. Yet. Hopefully they'll always act their age. You just really have to be vigilant.

My kids are 9 and 11 and they are still kids, I think it all depends on how they are raised. But, I have noticed a big change in kids.

yeah I heard that from all the hormones in our milk and food we're starting puberty sooner. That and the media. We see and hear too much and we're putin certain positions at a younger age.Parenting could also be better cuz it's easier to get away with things nowadays

I agree, movies and T.V. and music these days are having a bad influence on kids. Since they see it or hear it on T.V. and stuff they think it is "cool".
