Family is the meaning of the season. I am glad that I no longer have to go to two different states to see the family now.

The true meaning of the Christmas season goes waaaaayyyyy back to the beginnings of the catholic churches foundation. The Christmas tree came from the Norse mythology of having a sarcificial tree for their winter solstice. The decorations on the tree are to represent the light or star that appeared above Bethlehem to guide the wise men to the manger. Because most of the pagan(non-christian religions) ceremonies were held at the end of the year, the catholics moved the celebration of Christ's birth to wintertime instead of mid summer when he was actually born. The church felt it easier to just"convert" the pagan ceremonies over to christian ones by changing the symbolism's and meanings. Christmas, to answer your question is to celebrate the Messiah's birth, hence the giving of "gifts" and offers of good will for all peoples world wide.

the true meaning of the christmas season is about the birth of the man some call the son of God, Jesus Christ.I use to think it was about love and the birth of a little baby some hoped could save the world from itself, but alas this world is too far gone to ever be saved from its own destruction. its about nothing to me , its about time off from school or work, there are no virtues in it, its about greed and avarice , selfishness and who can go back to work or school and claim the biggest best gift, its a hollowday not a holiday or a holyday anymore.

As far as the religious part of it goes you can pretty much take your pick. My church doesn't celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus, but we do observe the holiday in various ways as a time of giving and family time together.
I think we are overly material in the ways we deal with the giving part. In sending Christ to us God gave us a sign and evidence of his love, and we should give primarily love to our friends and family. We need not give each other expensive gifts.
I think the way Christmas has been handled to a very large extent does suck, but that's not something I have to participate in. I was raised in a church which used Christmas as a means of celebrating the birth of Christ. I believe that simple message should show us the way to love and support each other.
I'm not enthusiastic about Christmas, but other members of my family are so I participate appropriately.

The whole bloody business
is a sham for greed and commerce.
At least in America.
People are unspeakably rue at this time.
Even mor so than usual
because they are self-righteous about 'God" & "Jesus."
So they rule...
Nauseating to be around.

It's a good excuse to spend time with family, especially those you don't see very often.
