Growing up we traditionally took ours down on January 7th since January 6th is the 12th day of Christmas (the Epiphany -- or the day of the Magi). That might be more of a Catholic thing. Now I'm an Atheist and our celebrations are more secular.

We take ours down as soon as possible after Epiphany, which comemmorates the arrival of the Wise Men, and is celebrated on 6 January.

Usually the first weekend after New Year's as it's been up since Thanksiving and I don't dust around the decorations, so it's time to really clean by then!!

I would say new years when there is no possible way of watching the ball drop.
