Pain is the sensation incurred in most animals resulting from the stimulation of certain nerves. These nerves are most often stimulated by physical damage to the body of the organism. All normal animals experience an physiological aversion to the pain sensation and naturally seek to avoid it. The sensation serves the dual purpose of alerting the organism to physical damage incurred to its own body and teaching the organism to avoid those behaviors that incur damage.
