I got my dad a new computer for Christmas, but the e-mails stored on his old one are crucial business-wise. We're backing up the old computer to an external hard drive and loading the data to the new one, including all the e-mail files. Once those new files are put on the new computer, how do we import them into Outlook Express?

I don't have it installed right now. So, from memory, here goes. Make sure you get the the rules and ignored people list from the registry. Search for OE rules.

After you install OE on the new machine, determine what it's directory name is (it creates one of those long funky ones
(Search for folder.dat is the easiest way to find it.)

Delete everything in that directory and load your old email into it.

If you don't see the email. you may have to delete folder.dat and then restart OE. You'll have the mail message, but you will lose all of the folders in the process. (That may happen in any case!).

P.S. The answer right above me is talking about "Outlook" and not "Outlook Express".

On the old computer, open outlook express. Go to "FILE->EXPORT->MESSAGES". Save the file. Put the file onto the new computer (using a cdrom, harddrive, whatever).

On the new computer, open outlook express, Go to "FILE>IMPORT>MESSAGES". Find the file that you saved from the old computer.

Simple as that....
