frank was donnie's unconscious side that made him commit all those crimes but was also the one that drew donnie out of bed to go outside, preventing him from dying in the jet engine impact. (the one that came through the roof and hit his bed)

Donnie's conscious side, knowing that frank was making him do all these things that lead to many bad things, wanted it to stop. Bad things include his gf that got run over and frank, the guy in the actual haloween costume of frank getting killed by the really mad donnie.

To stop this, he travelled back in time where he chose to stay in bed, which the plane engine would have hit and killed him. That way, gretecen would have never known him and not get runover that night. Frank would have not been shot by donnnie either.

IN addition!!!!, his mother and sister would have also survived because the engine, (remember they said that they did not konw where it came from and there was no other plane wreckage reported) came from the plane that hsi mother and sister were in in flight to the recital.

GREAT MOVIE

Remember, all this actual takes place in donnies dream while he sleeps. The idea of the movie, i think, is that if somethign bad was going to happen, and you had the power to stop it ( go back in time), then most people would do it. However, the backfire is that you're also letting bad things still happen. Notice, that he not only stopped bad thigns from happening but, he prevented bad things from getting noticed. Cunningham would not have been arrested due to Donnie dying.

I completely disagree with anyone who says tat this was all a fantasy. The film is about time travel, trying to explain it by saying "oh it was all a fantasy" is a complete cop-out. Was Donnie Darko on tv the other day or something? This is like the 5th question I have answered about it lol. Anyway ok I will try and make this super simple, there are other ways to interpret the film but here is how I see it. Time travel Frank (there are 2 one is real time) wakes up Donnie and after Donnie wakes up a plane part crashes through his house, Frank came through with the part, this was not really meant to happen, so it's not a loop it's Frank doing this. I think Frank's purpose is to show Donnie what is about to happen, it's obvious that everything that Donnie sees happening, Frank getting shot, Gretchen dying, his mom in a plane crash, it all happened in the past. The proof of this is that Time Travel Frank has a bullet wound which means Donnie shot him the last time this all happened. But the last time Time Travel Frank was not there to show Donnie that he could stop it all by sacrificing himself. In the end Donnie stays in bed, saving his whole family from death or heartache and saving his girlfriend and saving Frank. Frank could have gone back in time many times to try and prevent this and maybe this last time the one we see is the only one that worked, we are not told. Oh and Donnie is not crazy from pills or anything else, if you watch the deleted scenes (or director's cut) his pills are not real, they are placebos. Wiki is very often wrong and this time whoever posted the synopsis of the film completely ignored the scene where Donnie's medication who shown to never have been real meds. If you have any specific questions, put them up and I will try to answer. As best I can, please don't ask how time travel works lol I don't know haha.

Donnie is a superhero.....he is the chosen one and he is able to create a time machine and go back in time. He had to do this because of the parallel universe that had been created (we see this happen when Donnie’s sister gets home from her date and the clock strikes midnight – when the engine falls into Donnie’s room)...the parallel universe is unstable and if left alone it will collapse and destroy all of humanity. Frank leads Donnie out of his room and explains to him what he has to do to save the universe, saving him from the airplane engine. Donnie is led by Frank and Gretchen (Frank, by the way, is Donnie's sister's boyfriend) and the others in the movie to create the time machine and sacrifice himself to save the universe. Most of the movie is Donnie learning how to build the time machine (the vessel and the portal) and coming to terms with dying (fear of dying alone). He laughs at the end because he is happy that he succeeded.

This is a very simplistic answer (simple???) to a very complicated movie. I swear I'm not making this up! Go to www.donniedarko.com and check it out! You can even read parts of Roberta Sparrow’s (Grandma Death’s) book.

Donnie Darko is a great movie.
As for everything, you give the end the meaning YOU want.
Personnaly, I think he chooses to die, so he saves his girlfriend's life, & his sister's & mother's on the plane, & Frank's.
He has lived something great for a few days & think it's enough. He loved his girlfriend (can't remember her name - so annoying!!!) so much he prefered to know her alive & not remembering him than living without her... So romantic! & you can see the mother & the girlfriend waving at each other, when they have never met, as if they knew what happened...
Now, as I said, you see what you want in that not so happy ending... (& that song must be one of the saddest EVER!!!)

yeah it's kinda confusing... I think Donnie chose to die because it was either that or go with Frank again, and then his girlfriend would have ended up dead again, meaning it would all be for nothing.

It was ages ago that I watched it, but I think that Donnie realised that he had kill himself or everyone he loved would die, so it's quite sweet really - that he sacrificed himself to save others.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I think Donnie kills himself to save his girlfriend.

it is a Metaphor for Jesus:
Jesus was God's son, but he couldn't save him, and he let him die, for the sins of all mankind!
Thus, Donnie had to die, because of the sins committed!

That movie was so freaky! It wasn't bad though.
I saw that once but that was a looong time ago so I'm not so sure. I DO remember the evil bunny though =D
