conan was not a comic book movie... the character was around long before it became a comic...
i think the best film ever based on a comic was 'the crow'... not because it was a good adaptation, but just because it is one of my favorite movies ever...

I would have to say The X-MEN - The first movie.

It broke a long standing mold that depicted movie comics as campy. I personally found that the earlier Batman movies just weren't serious enough and suffered from stereotypical two-dimensional writing. The earlier Superman movies, which were better (Christopher Reeves) didn't have enough ummph, as the stories were written toward a general G/PG audience.

The first Xmen movie broke this mold and depicted a serious story and serious characters. It helped set the current trend toward the many comic driven movies and TV shows today. It's success (coupled with the success of the first Spiderman movie which followed) has fueled a new generation of superhero movies and TV Shows.

Conan the Barbarian was also done well but didn't have the impact the X-Men movie did.

On a side note. Did anyone ever see Roger Corman's B-Movie version of the Fantastic Four? It was never officially released but was surprisingly well done (a rainy Sunday afternoon type movie). The producers refused to release the film because they wanted to ensure that the first FF movie met all expectations and taken seriously by the audience. They wanted to avoid a disaster that might in turn negatively effect other comic book to movie offerings. Hollywood can be very fickle...

I think that the X-Men (followed by Spiderman) solidified this genre and have made it viable enough to withstand a few duds.

Batman Begins is probably the best superhero movie done to date, with the first Spiderman taking a close second. Hollywood should unfortunately stay away from all comic-based movies in general, because they NEVER have and NEVER will get them completely right. IF a comic movie could be done perfectly... hmm... Kingdom Come would be absolutely spectacular. The best thing Hollywood could ever do in relation to graphic novels would be to make Sandman as an HBO special.
