You are right, that is how it seems to be here
there are some people who value its religious meaning but most are just into the commercial idea
I think for those that actually care about the whole exchanging gifts on Christmas, the whole point is to support the idea of giving to others.
it is a time to think about people other than ourselves and to seek ways to show we care
i really believe it doesnt have to be expensive, just something to reflect how we feel about others, and to appreciate them
of course, to others it is another time to party the night away
and money is a huge thing
but i guess that is their thoughts of christmas and everyone has the right to their own opinons
:)

You have very valid points! Unfortunately Christmas has changed into a day of profiteering commercialism. We must remember it is a day to celebrate the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Actually I believe gift giving is a carryover from the Three Wise Men, who each brought a gift for the baby Jesus. They were truly wise.
But as Glutonary Americans that we are, we've expanded to more than simply ONE gift each!

Because it's fun.
Not everyone is religious.
If people want to get together, exchange gifts, and have a good time, what's it to you?
You do your thing, and let others do theirs.
Uh, isn't there something about Peace on Earth; Goodwill Toward Men?
Can't "Live, and let live" be part of that?
Why so people feel they have to control everything that everyone else does?
If you don't want to give gifts, don't.
If you want to sit around and talk to your imaginary friend, do.
I have many fond memories of my family getting together to laugh our *sses off, and eat, and sing, and unwrap presnts, and laugh our *sses off.
How did that ever harm you?

Jesus doesn't have anything to do with my celebration, it's all about Solstice. I suppose it matters most what you're doing it for... if you're gift giving is only so your kids can brag to their friends after xmas break, then that's what you're celebrating. If you're buying thoughtful gifts for people you love, then that's what you're celebrating. If you're gift giving in the name of your saviours birth... well I just don't get it. What do you do? say "Happy birthday Jesus" while handing your kids their presents? It doesn't make any sense to me, but that's what you're celebrating.

Everything that we do on Christmas is symbolic. (other than partying and drinking.) We exchange gifts on Christmas to symbolize the three wisemen that gave gifts to mary joseph and christ.

Americans will do almost anything to get money and have a good time. That's all.
I agree with you. It's CHRISTmas Day/Eve. Not FORGET-ALL-ABOUT-JESUS day/eve.

I AGREE THAT U.S.A. HAVE LOST THE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS. IT ALL COMMERICAL MEANING NOW. THE GIFT COMES FROM THE WISE MEN TAKING GIFTS, BUT THE AMERICANS HAVE ABSOLUTELY GONE COMMERICALLY ALL THE WAY.

We exchange gifts so retailers (esp. Wal-Mart) can get rich. Why else do you think we do it??
