People definitely spend money on fashion here, but I think folks here are more concerned with the hottest trend and whatever they think looks good on them, not so much the designer. People aren't really as loyal to designers out here so they don't bother to learn about them.

Actually the average American probably spends the same as any other other modern country. The misconception is what we spend so much money on. Our clothing is rather pricey at times, yet the quality is far from that of the Europeans (though there are exceptions).
Take American suits. A decent one averages between 3 and $500 yet they are entirley factory made without even the lightest hand stitching, have minimal effort when it comes to the cut, only abiding the basic principles, and fall apart the second you move your arm more than 90 degrees.
Now don't get me wrong, a higher priced item often is better than a lower one if you know a good deal about clothing, wether it's a poorley fitted oxford from Walmart or the most accurate jeans from 7amk, but most American's need to spend less anyways because we love to throw detergents and and rough dry cleaning chemicals on everything or shrink A|X shirts.
What's the point of buying an A|X t-shirt and drying it on the lowest heat only to have it shrink from L to XS?

Sure, we spend money on fashion. And I suppose it's fair to say that our knowledge of Italian/European (fashion I'm guessing) is very poor.
But since we don't live in Europe, that is to be expected. Americans don't tend to pay attention to the fashions (or even the current events for that matter) of other countries unless it directly affects them.
And not everyone takes the "cheapest option".

I'm petite (as in short) and can only shop at a few stores. Dillard's, Macy's, Ann Taylor Loft, Talbot's, etc. Obviously places like that cost more than say Wal-Mart or Target, but I usually look for sales. Even when I have the money to pay full price. Unless I just "have" to have something, then I'll pay full price. lol
I don't personally like the quality or style of most clothes in cheaper stores, so even if I wasn't short I probably still wouldn't shop in stores like Wal-Mart.
I'm aware of a few designers, but they're not important to me. What matters to me when it comes to clothes is quality, fit and price.

I don't think that many Americans have much info on Italian/European fashion. Also...we're all being over-run by cheap Walmart clothing so it's dulled our fashion sense. Walmarts in almost every town and they're spreading like a horrible mold...we almost have no choice but to wear crap.

human beings spend funds for an same reason that the British, the Swedes, the chinese, the Italians, the Germans, the Fiji Islanders, the Russians, the Saudi Arabians, the Iranians, the Bulgarians, the genuinely each and every man or woman and all and sundry that includes your concepts spends funds. Your question would make more desirable experience in case you would replace the note AMERICAN to human beings. human beings do compared to effective issues any more desirable than the different nationality.

It depends which type of American you're talking about. Most of the people that live in NY, FL or CA have a good sense of fashion and expensive taste as well. People that live in more rural states, like ME, VT, etc... are not as fashion conscious because...well especially in the winter, they go for what's warmer and more sensible for the weather, not for what looks good.
America is mixed up with rich and poor people, fashionistas and the not so in-style people....and so is every other country on this earth. You obviously haven't been around much.
