i cant help you with the first question but the second one i can. one of the main differences between LCD and CRT is definitely the size (depth-wise, that is). LCDs are also a lot lighter than CRT monitors in most cases and are of better quality by any means. Another difference is the cold-cathode LED light(s) that are installed behind the screen in an LCD. This gives you a much brighter screen and allows higher concentration to details. (thats why when you crack an LCD monitor or laptop screen it isnt an actual crack, all you did is cracked the bulb) Along with that, there is no glare whatsoever in most (about 98%) of the LCD monitors. On the downside LCDs are more expensive than CRTs. However, the price varies with the size of the monitor for both types

If it wasn't an accident and you have all documents pertaining to your monitor...then you should take it back where you purchased the monitor or send it back to the manufacturer for repair or exchange. The manufacturer usually expects you to re-package it in the original carton it was sold.

CRT is old technology (C)athode (R)ay (T)ube (just like our old TV's). Good yet heavy and bulky. Prone to burn in of images to the screen.
LCD (L)iquid (C)rystal (D)isplay newer technology lighter more energy effecient and more compact. Good choice but you can have pixels burn out as a possible problem.
But Todays best choice would be LCD or Plasma (more expensive, plasma is a gas).
