Convert everything to the smaller units, for easier computation and better accuracy. So, since there are 3 ft to the yard,
8 yds 2 ft = 8x3 + 2 = 26 ft
26 ft / 3 = 8 2/3 ft
Then if you want it in yards, divide by 3. Convert the 8 2/3 back to an improper fraction: 26/3 divided by 3 = 23/3 x 1/3 = 26/9 = 2 and 8/9 yd
Another way you could do this is to first express the dividend as a fraction in terms of the larger unit, then carry out the division. Even though most people who ask questions like this wish to avoid fractions, I'll do the next one that way...
6 ft 6 inches = 6 and 6/12 ft = 6 1/2 ft
6 1/2 divided by 5 = (convert to improper fractions)
13/2 divided by 5 = 13/2 x 1/5 = 13/10 = 1 and 3/10 ft or 1.3 ft

There are 3 feet in a yard, so 2 feet x yard/3feet = 2/3 yard:

8 2/3 yards * 3 = 26/3 yards x 3 = 26 yards

There are 12 inches in a foot, so 6inches x 1foot/12inches = 1/2 foot:

6 1/2 feet / 5 = 13/2 feet x 1/5 = 13/10 feet = 1 3/10 feet

8 yd 2 ft x 3 = 24 yd 6 ft = 26 yd

6 ft 6 in / 5 = 1.2 ft 1.2 in = 1 ft 3.6 in

1ft 3.6 in is the more realistic unit. Think about you go for shopping. Do you want to measure 3/10 ft or 3.6 in?
