I have had 3 DVT's in my right leg. Thats what doctors call blood clots, now. Mine were the result of a genetic blood clotting disorder called Leiden Factor 5 deficiency.
2 of my clots you could feel, one was so deep I couldn't feel it.
The ones I could feel were about the size of a quarter.
BLOOD CLOTS ARE VERY DANGEROUS. THEY CAN (AND OFTEN DO) KILL PEOPLE. They kill more people a year than
AIDS and Diabetes combined.
YOU MOTHER NEEDS TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AT THE NEAREST HOSPITAL RIGHT NOW !!!!!!
DO NOT WAIT !!!! IF THE BLOOD CLOT BREAKS OR MOVES,
SHE COULD HAVE A HEART ATTACK (if it goes to her heart), a stroke (if it goes to her brain), or a pulmonary embolism (if it goes to her lung).
What they will do at the hospital is some tests. Bloodwork to check her blood clotting time and a venous doppler ultrasound.
If it is a clot, they will admit her to the hospital and put her on an IV
full of blood thinners. She'll be in there about 3-5 days. After she goes home she'll have to take pills for 6 - 12 months to finish dissolving the clot.

Best thing to do is take your mom to the doctor ASAP. If her lower leg is painful , tender to touch and discolored it could be acute deep vein thrombosis. Warn her not to move foot as much or pump it as, if it is DVT, the clot can be disclogged. Or it could be just muscle spasms of the the muscles of the lower leg. It usually fells like a ball of really tensed muscles. Best move would be to be checked by an MD.

Go to the doctor NOW. And I mean NOW, even though it's Christmas day and all. Blood clots are NOT something to sit on and wait. Any sort of lump in the calf is dangerous, but it suggests a whole ton of other things... and a clot is definitely a serious possibility.

But honestly, I'm not trying to scare you, but you NEED TO GET HER MEDICAL ATTENTION NOW.
