In general all modern PCI slots are created equal. That said, the chipsets on the market today still treat various slots with IRQ routing peculiars... So, if you are ADDING a video card, first make sure you can DISABLE the existing video unit (probably an integrated chipset function whicj will need to be disabled by BIOS or by Jumper), then try plugging a PCI card into the first available slot. This is a PCI motherboard I assume since a newer PCIx or AGP only has 1 slot for video.
Anyway, try the first slot and then if you have any lockup type problems, (immediately seen) then try the other slot(s). I think you'll be fine with the first available slot.

It's according to what video card you got. And if there was/is one on-board. There are AGP slots, PCI-E slots, and ordinary PCI slots. PCI cards are very rare and very old, the agp is getting old and almost to the point of not selling, pci-e video cards are the newest but you have to have a motherboard with that type of slot. Identify what slot(s) you have on the motherboard. If you have an on-board, it might be better than most ordinary pci cards you can buy.

If your into gaming you do not want a PCI card. Sense its your first time I will give you some info. All PCI video card suck....

No one buys them unless its for an older PC and they do not wish to game.

You should have a AGP or a PCI-E slot on your motherboard. You should not have both only one or the other.

PCI slots function at 1x speed , AGP will function at 4-8x speed but only 8x are used for videocards and PCI-E will function at 16x speed.

So PCI-E is twice as good as AGP but your PC might only have a 8x AGP slot if so thats still 8x better then a PCI card.

I suggest you get a BFG Geforce 7300GS OC 256MB PCI-E card if your PC has a PCI-E slot that is.

No not really but it's a good idea to install the card in the slot closest to the CPU, usually is slot #1. The system bios will see the card first when booting. If you can't boot with the video card in the 1st pci slot, move it to the second pci slot.

In the older motherboards you use to have to put it in slot one. But with the newer ones it usually does not matter which slot it is plugged into. Also if it has onboard video, you will have to go into the cmos setup and change the setting to use the AGP or PCI video card

if you got a AGP card...put it in the agp slot of your motheboard
or if you got a pci-ex card put it in the pci-ex 16 slot of your motherboard..
you cant have both agp & pci-ex in a single motherboard.
if your mother board doesn't support agp & pci-ex..and you got yourself a pci based graphic card..it won't matter where you put it in

No..Alienware is so overpriced yet authentic once you've the money bypass for it. For a respectable Gaming pc for a cheap cost get a Dell XPS. and modify it your self (or not). It does not count number in case you change it because in case you order "maximum reliable" kit than there is not any choose for modificatino.
