Someone grasping at straws out of fear on their deathbed is not proof of the existence of god. Your logic is flawed, if you are attempting to prove god that way. That's more of a demonstration about that nature of human character than it is about anything else.

I think he read something from the Pilgrim's Progress, a religious allegory most popular among fundamentalist Christians.
