When I was growing up, we always named our couches. There were Big Blue, Country Joe, Old Man, Leatherneck and Greenie through the years. Did anyone else ever name the furniture?

It seemed to prevent the fights with my brother and I had each Saturday morning, because rather than calling couch, we could call the specific couch we wanted to sit in to watch tv. One had a better view of the tv. Heaven forbid we actually sit next to each other.

We name a lot of stuff; partly for clearer communication as you describe and partly for the fun of it. I never thought about naming furniture until you mentioned it, but mom got a foot stool for Christmas today and we named that Bernie. Here's some of our other names:

Cars: Dot, Lucy, Dan, Sally
Trucks: Whitey, Buck, Tim
Tractors: Big John, Mooboo, Ace
Pastures: Martin, Garden, Ring, Stable
Garbage Disposal: Charlie
Rooms: Soft room, Blue room
Kitchen Table: Hoosier
Computer: Zippy
Barns: Lonny Shed
Horse Trailer: Star, Carson

I vaguely remember my mother doing this, must of been that Dr. Spock theories back in the day?
I remember our car was big Bertha as children...We do not name our inanimate objects, more power to those that do :0)
Oh yes I remember the day when brother and I could not sit next to each other or have the same friends. Lord forbid we had to share something....We were not raised this way either, though we have raised our children to share and I feel they are much closer for it. There toys is what they share normally, oldest shares his money etc. with his little brothers...Clothing is not shared this is just nasty...

nah, i never named a furniture in my house. however, if the furnitute itself has a specific name already, then when we would say it name to be more specific.
because one of the many furniture that we have is called E.T. because the design of it is very unique. we didnt name it, but the salesperson told us that the name was E.T.

lol

No. I can't say that I have. But I think I will start. I don't know how successful I will be though. I have always tried to name my cars but to date I haven't found a suitable name for any of them.
