Hey

I was wondering how deeply a four year college would look into your disciplinary records, and whether the school discriminates based on the records. I am applying to Cornell, Harvard, and University of Michigan, and I'm not sure if a short suspension or dismissal will hurt my chances. Thanks.

I was suspended for a week for a disciplinary infraction when I was a high school student, and I was admitted to every college to which I applied (Yale, Smith, Vassar, etc.).

I did not mention my suspension on my applications. My "disciplinary records" were not sent to the colleges to which I applied, only my grade transcripts.

Unless you have a police record, which sometimes impacts your ability to qualify for federal financial aid and/or your ability to qualify for campus housing, you should be absolutely fine.

Best wishes to you!

PS. I went to Vassar. I now hold a PhD. Don't worry. :)

I think your short suspension will considered as part of your overall application. I don't think it will automatically mean you will get rejected, but it might hurt your case a bit. If everything else on your application is strong and up to the school's standards, it might taken into consideration. It would be most helpful to ask an admissions representative from those schools about how it might affect your overall application. Good Luck with college application!

Unfortunately the admitting board usually makes a point of looking at your records. But if your grades are good and your scores are high, that may help. Ultimately something like that does hurt your chances, but you never know, they also look at what you've done since then.
