I suppose everyone has this problem at one time or another. I would also imagine that a lot has to do with the relatives themselves.

There are a couple of questions, though, I'd like to ask.

Did these people just show up on your doorstep and expect free room and board for the holidays? Or were they invited?

If the answer to the first question is Yes, I'd advise you to tell them that the next time they do this, it had better be with the understanding that the visit will be a short one for a given number of hours--say, 2 or 3--because it's a busy time of year and unexpected guests can pose a problem if you've made other plans.

If the answer to the second question is Yes, then tell them up front, when you issue the invitation, that it will be for a specific length of time, such as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Hope this helps!

Yeah! Who created that custom that made relatives stay at each other's pad? I wish MY relatives would be trapped between time, space and matter.
