1 ton is 2000 pounds, so 500 pounds is 500/2000 or 1/4 ton:
12 1/3 tons + 20 500/2000 tons
=12 1/3 tons + 20 1/4 tons
= 12 4/12 tons + 20 3/12 tons
= 32 7/12 tons
1 pound is 16 ounces, so 3 ounces is 3/16 pounds:
10 pounds - 7 3/16 pounds
Then you can "borrow" 1 pound, or 16/16 ounces, from the 10 pounds, which will give you 9 16/16 pounds.
= 9 16/16 pounds - 7 3/16 pounds
= 2 13/16 pounds

A. 1 ton = 2000 pounds so you are adding (12 1/3)*2000 pounds to (20*2000)+500 pounds = 65166 2/3 pounds = 32 7/12 tons
B. 1 pound = 16 oz so you are subtracting 7*16+3 from 10*16
160-(7*16+3) = 45 oz = 2.8125 lb
