As far as HIV or AIDS goes, there are only two ways to get it:

--unprotected sex, and
--bloodborne exposure, either by a bad blood transfusion (rare these days) or by getting a cut or minor wound in contact with something or someone infected (think a cut in contact with anal or genital tissue). So by all means, invest in condoms....but get Band-Aids too.

Everything else is a big pile of BS designed to get people paranoid. Period. And if you are worried about condom use, there are a couple of things you can do:

--Buy, inspect, and handle your own condoms *yourself*, only. A lot of condom damage occurs when people try to play it up, and end up a) not opening the package correctly--like with one's teeth for example, b) don't inspect the thing for damage before using it--yes, they can get damaged just like any other consumer good, or c) they let their partner apply the thing for them, and in the process, fingernails or some such ends up tearing the thing.

Point is: They are fragile, and need to be handled with all due respect and care.

--Invest in a thicker, more permanent, reusable sheath, and the lubricant needed to apply it, and the gentle soaps needed to *clean it*. Will climax take longer for you? Yes. Is this always a bad thing? No. And the odds of anything getting past *two* layers of latex are so high, you'd have better luck trying to get hit by a meteor....

As far as other STDs are concerned, it depends on the individual disease....some are *highly* contagious (like herpes simplex), others, not so much, but the general rule is that unprotected genital contact is a no-no regardless....I mean, they are called *Sexually* Transmitted for a *reason*, yes?

In *any* event....the *Best* rule of thumb is....Know Your Partner. Know where s/he's been sleeping. Know what the odds are that the person could get something like Herpes or Pubic Lice or worse....insist on getting to know someone before humping them. And insist on *full disclosure*.

I know, sounds terribly boring and not fun. But then again, so is getting sick and/or dying without having *clue one* as to what's going on.

Hope this helps!

Are condoms effective?
Used correctly and consistently, latex condoms help protect people from HIV and other sexually transmitted germs. Although they greatly reduce the risk of infection, they are not 100 percent effective. Condom failure usually result from improper use.

Spermicide condoms are the best because they kill the sperm on contact.

What do you do if a condom breaks?
If a condom breaks during sexual intercourse, then pull out quickly and replace the condom. Whilst you are having sex, check the condom from time to time, to make sure it hasn't split or slipped off. If the condom has broken and you feel that semen has come out of the condom during sex, you should consider getting emergency contraception such as the morning after pill.

What condoms should you use for anal intercourse?
With anal intercourse more strain is placed on the condom. You can use stronger condoms (which are thicker) but standard condoms are just as effective as long as they are used correctly with plenty of lubricant. Condoms with a lubricant containing Nonoxynol 9 should NOT be used for anal sex as Nonoxynol 9 damages the lining of the rectum increasing the risk of HIV and other STD transmission.

Is using a condom effective?
If used properly, a condom is very effective at reducing the risk of being infected with HIV during sexual intercourse. Using a condom also provides protection against other sexually transmitted diseases, and protection against pregnancy. In the laboratory, latex condoms are very effective at blocking transmission of HIV because the pores in latex condoms are too small to allow the virus to pass through. However, outside of the laboratory condoms are less effective because people do not always use condoms properly. How is AIDS spread?
AIDS (a result of HIV infection) is caused by a virus (HIV) that spreads through sex-vaginal, oral, or anal- and blood-to-blood contact with infected people. HIV cannot spread from person to person by casual everyday contact.

There is "always" the possibility of the condom leaking or braking. Don't have sex, even protected, with someone you're not sure about. As far as pregnancy goes, be double safe both should be on some kind of birth control.

Good God. Go take a sexual education class. Exchange of bodily fluids is usually the problem, including licking the anus, condoms can leak over the top, viruses can go right through a condom because they are so small. There is no safe sex, just safer sex.

The easiest possible logical way to prevent STD/HIV - Have sex only when married, God-willing, you are safe.

condoms are not leak proof...they have stress factors so they can break easily....no sex at all is the best way to go.
