Not at all. A tailpipe muffler is just a way to make your car make a different sound. No offense on this but for the most part it just looks stupid. If you are trying to improve hp, try a simple intake change or even a performance exhaust. Much better ways to spend the money then a tailpipe muffler. A lot of people have bought them and actually done more damage then anything else to the vehicle. for example melting the plastic on the bumper.

Most of the later model cars and trucks from 1980 forward have lower compression engines and they have a need for back pressure, but if you have an older car or one who's engine compression has been altered or raised, (bored out) then having less restriction on the exhaust can help it or give it more horsepower, but taking a stock engine or factory engine and putting unrestricted exhaust on it will help it a little, but remember that if you don't have some restriction on a low compression engine it can cause it to burn a valves. I have always found it better to be able to hear the motor over the exhaust. That way if something is going wrong you can hear it before it does any major damage.

Ask yourself this: how could something that channels gas to make it more quiet give you more power?

I suggest that it might make it sound more powerful, but there is no way it could make any car more powerful.

The maximum power would be with no muffler or Catalytic Converter. Or even tailpipes or a manifold.

Of course, then your car would catch fire and you would be asphixiated, but for about ten minutes or less, you would have maximum power.

No. The tailpipe doesn't block anything. If you want any gains, then you'll need to go cat-back, and even then, don't expect more than 5. For about 10 hp, you need header-back though.

Not really. If its less ristrictive a tailpipe mufler alone may add 2 or 3 bhp. Nothing you would ever feel. So do yourself and everyone else a favor and leave the stock one installed.

Headers can help increase horsepower. How big the collection chambers are helps define how easy or hard it is to complete the firing cycle with the exhaust aspect. Larger chambers allows the easiest exhaust cycle, thereby increasing available horsepower.
