Tell them you would like to see what you are doing? :)
Try this...my son tried it almost worked....Tell them that you would like to become a either a computer graphic artist or a digital photographer. Both require good graphics cards and not a whole lot else...
Should you really want to do that email me and I'll tell you where you can get the software for free or at virtually no cost and the eqiupment for next to nothing...

Well...it depends. What is your graphics card now? What is the connection, AGP or PCIe? I can come up with a good excuse, I just need to know the details. Cause, if its an old computer, and an old graphics card, a new card won't necessarily work, or fix the problem. What is the reason you want a new one? Does it play newer games? Just a few questions prior to launching the excuse.

Tell them that your current games will not work. Or make some thing up like the computer will not run once Direct x 10 comes out because my card only supports direct x 9. Unless they know a lot about computers then your screwed.

"The powerpoint presentations for some of my school projects don't display properly".
I can't think of too many other things that come even close to graphic intensive that could constitute constructive reasons. Unless you take a class for video editing and publishing, or are part of a production team or something.

Tell them that your current card doesn't support new software. Or it makes your pc slow down. Or it has problems with playing video files...

Are you into CAD stuff? Programs like AutoCAD need some pretty decent video cards...
