That when the networks annouce how funny a new sitcom is, then you watch it and it's backed with canned laughter. If it's that good why do they need canned laughter? Why not play the film to a live audience and record the laughter? Better yet, air it without laughter, if it's good it will stand on it's own

There are highly paid people that study every aspect of what you take for granted in a sit com. They study patterns to make the show as good as they can so they can more effectively sell advertising time on the network

very few shows are done in front of a live audience any more because the actors cant deal with the pressure of having to be perfect. recording in front of a live audience doesnt allow for as many mistakes. and having laughter in certain parts of the sitcom convinces the people watching to laugh. there are a lot of things that people wouldnt normally laugh hard at but will crack up at if other people are laughing.
