I have been laid off and still need to work. I would like to work in my profession but now I will do almost anything.

Teach at the college or university level. Public education would disilllusion you. Plus, it sounds like you are not ready for retirement so give it some thought and best of luck.

I assume when you say "I still need to work" this is for financial reasons? If so then you have a serious problem. You will not find work in your field unless you have special skills not normally possessed (in which case you would not have been laid off). They (meaning companies) can hire an engineer much younger for much less money than you would require, and if you would work for the same money, why would they hire you. You're at the end of your career and the young engineer has many years left.
If you need to work because you find you can not handle NOT working (that's where I found myself (laid off engineer), and money is not a primary issue, then you go with something that interest you. Don't be surprised if it entails retraining, and self employment. Good Luck and have fun

What are your other interests? Are you mechanically or technically inclined, do you like to fix things, or possibly look into teaching. Teachers are needed to teach engineering. You may need to go back to school.

Try teaching. It can be rewarding, and many states have alternative certification programs aimed at experienced professionals with a knowledge of math and science.
